World Toilet day.

World toilet day may sound weird but it's something worth celebrating....

World Toilet Day is a campaign to motivate and mobilize millions around the world on issues of sanitation, to promote good hygiene and health practices.

A feeling of disgust strucks me when I think of going to the toilet in open? No privacy, no dignity and no clean water to wash your hands afterwards..

Even giving a thought is like a scary nightmare. But this is the reality for some 2.5 billion people in the world who do not have access to safe toilets and adequate sanitation.

Today on world toilet day I would like to share my experience where my 2.5 yr old son made me proud.

We were returning from a marriage far far away from a village in Himachal pradesh. Weather was not favourable it rained from heavily to bit shower. There were roads but in poor condition, no one could be seen. We were alone riding in our car on long road patch. Suddenly my son said he wanted to go to toilet.

We were in place called nowhere because there was no one around and finding a toilet seemed impossible. We were so helpless that we asked him to do the stuff in the jungle, because he was too small to be requested to wait and control.

But to our surprise he cried out loud...Noooooo..there is no seat..no water...I don't want to do...

We tried to convince him but.....so

We went on...driving...searching....

He cried all the time, he was in pain but was not willing to poo in jungle or on road side.

After about half an hour we found market but no toilet...someone told that there are public toilet down the mountain...me and my husband took him and rushed there finally a smile of relief came seeing a toilet seat and clean water.

Me and my husband felt so proud of him for taking a stand at the age when many kids of his age give a  damn attitude.

As Suzy Kssem said in one of his quotes- Stand up for what you believe in, even if you stand alone.

After an year of his birth, I was tired of dirty laundry and decided to talk to him. I simply explained him about hygiene and use of toilet seat and washing hands. Although he had a seat but didn't preferred much. Potty training is not as easy as it seems/sounds.

Now He is 4.5 yrs now and his class teacher and our family friends go GA-GA over the fact that he is so particular about hygiene.

It's difficult to control Nature's call. You look around for the nearest toilet and realise with a sinking heart there is no facility around.

There are two problems specially in remote areas of India and that is Lack of (public) toilets and lack of an attitude towards NOT peeing in public.

Whenever we go out, a common disgusting sight is of men sanding with face towards a wall peeing in open and not finding a public toilet because they call it as the biggest pressure....!

Really?????

If my 2.5 yrs old son can control so can anyone. When we women can wait till we find a public toilet why can't you(men)????

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given the sanitation issue a top political priority and thanks to him and his Swaach Bharat mission...and not to forget the advertisement of Dettol.... " khane se pehle sada haath dhona...."
"Lifebuoy hai jahan tandarusti hain wahan..."
HUL campaign where children say " Haath muh bum...bimari se bachne ka tarika...."
Kids telling to use hand sanitiser when there is no water around.

Kids do take them seriously....my son actually sings the jingles....that means he actually pays attention to what they are saying....

I wish adults too take the concept of sanitation seriously...

3 things need to be done-
KAP- knowledge-Attitude-Practise

Knowledge- One should have complete knowledge about the health hazards of open defecation.

Attitude- One should have positive attitude toward the concept of use of toilet which can come only after thorough knowledge.

And Practise what is right even when in a unfavourable condition.

World toilet day may sound weird but it's something worth celebrating....
